One of the best parts of Marin Academy is that it is in the center of one of Marin’s most food-populated cities. It’s a privilege to grab a bite to eat off-campus during lunch or a quick snack on your way home or after practice. Unfortunately, many restaurants and cafes don’t get as much hype compared to Marin Academy student’s staples. In addition to shedding some light on these hidden gems, I want to urge you to make an effort to try these mouthwateringly flavorful establishments next time you aren’t feeling the cafe lunch or need a quick bite to eat after school or extracurriculars.
1. Julie’s Hummus Bar and Grill
Located inside the enticing strip of small restaurants and shops commonly known for Mr. Pickles is Julie’s Hummus Bar and Grill. To enter this establishment, one must look past the quick and easy sandwiches and overly sweet Cold Stone ice cream. Upon entering the restaurant, you will be hit with a rush of A.C. Then, breathe in the alluring scent of roasting lambs, chickens, and beef smothered in Mediterranean spices. On the menu, find Mediterranean staple options like shawarma platters chock full of your choice of fragrant lambs, chickens, and beefs with a side of fluffy rice and a refreshing Shirazi salad; a traditional shawarma full of the same meat options or a crispy decadent falafel; or a filling falafel salad. While options may seem slightly limited, the food offered is so good, you won’t wish for anything more. So go enjoy an authentic Mediterranean experience at Julie’s Hummus Bar and Grill.
2. Puentez Taqueria
Trying to find an underground authentic Mexican restaurant? Look no further than Montecito strip mall, only a five-minute drive away from campus. A quick walk to the circle of cafes and restaurants will lead you to Puentez Taqueria: the perfect after-school snack that has remained overshadowed for too long. Once you walk inside the family-owned business, you are met with smiles and a lively energy. Choose from a wide variety of options to be made to order right in front of you. From burritos to fresh tamales to tacos to enchiladas, every key Mexican meal is covered. With every mouthful of these delicious options, you can taste, along with typical Mexican flavors, the love and tradition put into each bite. My favorite item to order is the Super Deluxe Burrito with the addition of extra Puentez original spicy salsa. Next time you’re craving some mouthwatering Mexican food, I implore you to stop by Puentez Taqueria.
The San Rafael food scene has much to offer. Taking the extra time to get out of the rut that is eating the same foods over and over again will produce wonders for your taste buds. And luckily, I’ve given you guys a couple of great places to start.
